In Adult Sunday School, we are intentional about knowing truth by teaching and applying the Word of God to our lives. We are intentional about serving others to meet people’s needs so that the Church is healthy and growing. We are intentional about reaching people with the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe that Sunday School is a primary ministry in the Church to fulfill the Great Commission in making disciples. It is for this reason that we have established our Three Core Values.
The Three Core Values of Sunday School
1. Know Truth through teaching and applying the Word of God
2. Serve Others by meeting needs within the Church through Care Groups
3. Reach People for Jesus Christ and Church membership through Care Group Outreach
In order for us to accomplish our Three Core Values, each Core Value must be given intentional emphasis during Sunday School. For this reason, we are intentional stewards of our ministry time and follow the Sunday School Class Structure.
Sunday School Class Structure (9:00 - 10:15 a.m.)
1. Fellowship Time (10 minutes) - This is a time of welcome and fellowship, as well as coffee and donuts. It is a time for guests to discover that South Side is a place of family.
2. Announcements (5 minutes) - Our Sunday School is the Communication Center of the church. It is during this time that members and guests find out about ministry and serving opportunities in our church.
3. Outreach (10 minutes) - The Outreach Leader will introduce guests who have come as the result of contacts made by the class, invite the sharing of witnessing testimonies, and share specific weekly emphases that are provided for focusing on Outreach.
4. Teaching (30 minutes) - The teacher presents the lesson that he/she has prepared during the week that emphasizes observation, interpretation and application of the Word of God.
5. Care Groups (20 minutes) - Care Group Leaders meet with their Care Groups, take roll, assign absentee contacts to other group members to make in the coming week, discusses ministry needs within the group, and organizes the people to meet those needs. They also lead their group prayer.
Care Group Outreach
On the first and third Sunday nights of each month, individual Care Groups in all adult Sunday School classes meet in a group member's home for prayer, fellowship and outreach to the lost and unchurched in our community.
First Sunday Connections - Individual Care Groups meet in a member’s home at 6:00 pm to pray and share about Connections they have made during the week and that day prior to their gathering together.
So what does a First Sunday Connection look like? A First Sunday Connection is a front porch connection only. Our intention is to provide a family or individual with a smile and an invitation to visit South Side. Care Group members will also ask if there is a concern for which they can pray with them. If answered in the affirmative, the Care Group members will pray with them right then. They will also offer an Outreach Card that includes the group member’s name and phone number. This makes those who stopped by their home the point of connection to South Side. The whole of the Connection time should take three to five minutes.
Third Sunday Fellowships - Individual Care Groups meet in a member’s home at 6:00 pm for a shared meal with those whom they have connected and invited. This is a time of relaxed fellowship, games, and conversation. It is a no-strings-attached time to show the love of Jesus Christ to those who need Him. In the event that only current Care Group members attend, the group will again spend time in prayer together on behalf of those who are the focus of the group’s Outreach.
We encourage you to visit Adult Sunday School classes to connect with a group of believers that feels like family. Join us in our vision to Know Truth, Serve Others and Reach People.
